Food We Miss (An Update)
I’m redesigning our blog at the moment, and was looking at old posts, when I noticed the “Food We Miss” post is due for an update. A lot of this we’ve found:
- Beans: Korean’s have beans, just not the ones we love…
- Fruit: Some of it is easy to find, and not too expensive
- Family Dinner Night (Chexmix drumsticks, corned beef, tacos…): You can’t buy this.
- Cheese that actually has flavor:…comes at a price
- Venison sausage (with our eggs and pancakes): Still miss this.
- Sweet potatoes and green bean casserole at Thanksgiving: Ditto.
- Chocolate for cheap: Got it.
- Hummous, Falafel and pita bread: A restaurant in Itaewon provides our fix.
- Mexican food: Not quite the same, but we’ve found places to do the trick.
- Wheat bread with GRAINS!:_ Sold in the bakery of our subway stop._
- Orzo: Haven’t looked, but I’m sure this at one of the department stores.
- Fresh Thyme: Department store, albeit expensive…
- ” ” Cilantro: Department store, albeit expensive…
- ” ” Basil: Currently growing on our Kitchen table.
- ” ” Mint: Department store, albeit expensive…
- ” ” Parsley: Grocery Store.
- The Korean Food from Maru (Lunch Box Special): __Surprisingly NO!_
- Triscuits, Cheez-Its, Goldfish, Wheat Thins: STILL MISS IT!
- Water from the tap: 50% of koreans drink it from the tap. I do it sometimes.
- Oatmeal: Found it!
- Frosted Mini Wheats: Found things similar.
- Rice Crispy Treats: Karen made them once.
- Brownies: You can buy these in a variety of locations.
- Any type of casserole/hotdish: Nope.
- Kale: Found it, but can’t make Kale Chips without an oven :(
- POPCORN: Found it, cheap too.
- Palak Paneer: Great Indian place near our school.
- Panera Bread: Still hasn’t made its way to Korea.
- Olga’s: Same as Olga’s
I don’t miss food from home nearly as much as I first did. Every now and then something will sound really good to me, but there is plenty of satisfying food here. I could probably eat Vietnamese everyday… However, I’m tempted to job on a plane after watching this each week: http://blogs.trb.com/cheeseburgershow/
